Lisbon has a clear position on climate change mitigation. The city subscribed the Mayors’ Pact for Climate and Energy, the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the C40 Cities Network and approved the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy and Climate in 2018.

To be at the forefront of implementing a sustainability agenda, the city chose to embrace this topic as a whole. With this ambition, the Municipality of Lisbon set a challenge to the city, companies, organisations, associations, public and private institutions to take on the Lisbon Capital Green European Commitment 2020 – Climate Action Lisbon 2030, with an ambitious agenda for the next decade and under the motto CHOOSE EVOLVE: 2030 measures for 2030. Mobility is a cornerstone theme for the Green Capital. Lisbon has a cohesive city-wide vision for sustainable mobility and is achieving this through measures to restrict car use and prioritise walking, cycling and public transport.

The Host team joined this initiative from the very beginning, which is perfectly aligned with ERTICO’s goal for the 2020 ITS European Congress to be carbon neutral. The Congress host chose to set a positive carbon footprint for the event and helped, together with more than 200 volunteers, to plant 200 trees in Lisbon. Councilman Miguel Gaspar joined efforts with the President of ITS Portugal and the ITS 2020 team for a great event last Saturday, under a sunny morning sky.

Among the planted species are olive trees, cork oaks, hazel canes and others – the trees chosen help mitigate the most negative effects of climate change, such as heatwaves. In the year of Lisbon Green Capital 2020, the goal is to plant 100,000 trees. #ITS2020Lisbon #Lisbon #ECGA2020 #choosetoevolve
